Bill Maxwell Jr. and his wife Dorinne

During his tenure as head coach of football (1991-94), Bill Maxwell, who passed away in 1998, earned the respect and admiration of his players, their families, and the whole Hobart and William Smith community. His wife Dorinne was a friend of Hobart Athletics from the time they arrived on campus and continued to be active in the Geneva community until her passing in 2006.

Over the years various prizes in their names have been given to students, alums, and community members who have displayed leadership skills and a commitment to community service. Recently their son Bill Jr. has recommitted to funding The Maxwell Award in their memory and has added a bequest in his will to further support the award.

“My Dad cherished his time with the Hobart Football program and his players felt like family. For my mom and her caring nature, giving back to the community after Dad passed and maintaining that connection was deeply important,” says Bill. “I’m proud to honor both their legacies and hope that by endowing these awards our family can inspire others to give back.”

Bill lives in DeWitt, New York, and is the Electrical Facilities Engineer for SUNY Upstate Medical University. In addition to his support for HWS, he established a Scholarship for Women in Electrical Engineering at SUNY Canton in 2020. Bill still follows Hobart Football and tries to get back to The Boz for games as much as he can.
